You might be wondering what it is and why I am working on this idea. Grab a cup of coffee and let me ramble a bit…
How this has come about… “listening tour”
Back in 2018 I did a “listening tour” with Minneapolis and St Paul senior recruiter, HR, talent leaders, CEO’s, civic leaders, college and university career services, colleagues and friends. While I had/have some (strong) beliefs about what is going on in the region… I wanted to know what others were thinking.
Here are some highlights:
We have a number of great Recruiter and HR groups in town and events are full, demand for content is high
Yet there are a lot of topics, themes and conversations that are NOT being had
There is a want/need from those I spoke with to elevate the marketing of the region as a great place to live and work
There is not one place to find a list of Minnesota Recruiter and HR events
A stronger feeling of community is wanted and needed
Those items and a few others are the void I am wanting to fill and where I am starting.
I want to elevate the level of conversation that is going on in the region. We used to have content for Directors to VP of HR and Recruiting and talk about “big picture” things like what the future of talent and workplace would be like. We shared ideas freely. We shared strategies and tactics… what was working and what had not. We networked together.
And we did recruiter training. A lot of it “how to’s” and things we could take back to our desk and try the next day. (Well, Monday since all the events were on a Friday)
I want to get back to that.
While COVID 19 has changed a lot of things, yes that’s an understatement, I think a new focus on what we do is needed more now than before.

Currently on my mind (in no order)… how to recruit to the region, building multi generational teams, effective retention strategies, creating diverse and inclusive cultures, how to prepare for a recession that one day will come, best practices for building tech teams (I think about this just about every hour of every work day), effective onboarding and interviewing/hiring/mentoring junior developers. And of course learning and tuning effective recruiting tactics and strategies.

If we have not crossed paths… a few highlights: I along with some friends in the summer of 2007 started the Minnesota Recruiters group and built it into the largest regional recruiting conference in the U.S., been recruiting in the tech space for 20+ years, started the Minnesota Headhunter blog (this site) in 2005 (the longest running regional recruiting blog), I’ve done a large number of speaking engagements and been in the press more than a few times.
