Next week… May 22nd, 2015 I will be making my 5th (I think appearance) at Social Media Breakfast Minneapolis St Paul. I always look forward to speaking to the group and once again did not let Mykl Roventine finish asking the question if I would be interested before I said yes.
These are my people.
And this is the group that took me in many years ago when the Recruiter and HR community was still anti Social Media. I knew it was going to matter and the SMB folks were speaking my language.
So rather than be “recruiter guy” I was a “student” and sat in the back and took notes. Lots and lots of notes.
They also affirmed much of what I was thinking… having that was BIG for me.
It’s been a couple of years since I did a career specific presentation with the group. And given what has been going on locally and the region the last 15 months we are due for this conversation.
There has been A LOT of churn in the jobs economy. Many groups are hiring and a few large groups have laid off many, many people.
Here is the summary of the session:
Whether you're actively looking for a new position or just open to hearing about new opportunities, social media is key to standing out in today's job market. The recruiting landscape has shifted in recent years, with many companies using new methods, tools, and software to screen potential candidates.
Join Paul DeBettignies for an updated look into today's job market. He'll discuss emerging trends, the importance of social media in career prospecting, and tips & tricks to improve your hireability for potential employers.
May 22nd from 8-10 am
514 Studios (Warehouse District - Downtown Minneapolis)

I will have some slides, some things I want you to be thinking about and doing. Please… PLEASE ask questions. Interact with me. This is not going to be a lecture. I want this to be a conversation.
A few questions I have been asked:
What is the morning like?
A bunch of people, lots of coffee, breakfast of some sort including bacon (duh). Here’s a photo from last year:
Why so early?
The group is called Social Media Breakfast… not Lunch or Happy Hour. Although a Happy Hour session could be fun.
Why the Friday before the holiday weekend?
Events are usually the last Friday of the month and yes, when we are done I am getting in my car, hitting the road for a long weekend away.
I’m not in IT (who you recruit for) does that matter?
No, this conversation is for any skill set, education level and age.
Will this be boring?
Will you make fun of the Badgers?
Will you use a bad word or two?
(BLEEP) yeah, probably. But I am mellowing out a little.
I have a question I likely do not want to ask in a group setting, what do I do?
Send me an email ahead of time and I will work it in to the conversation firstname.lastname@example.org
