Minnesota Morning… IBM Layoffs, JavaScript User Group and Minnesota Jobs

Super Bowl XLIX (49 for those who don’t remember the weird things we had to learn in grade school) is this evening. I have managed to skip all the pre game hype and commercial nonsense.

I am going to sit back, relax, put a pizza in the oven, be sure to take bathroom breaks during the game so I can see the commercials and… likely fall asleep. And then later tonight turn on ESPN to see the highlights and go to YouTube for the missed commercials.

I guess I am picking Seattle.

This has nothing to do with anyone’s deflated balls. Or cheating. Or…

I do need to finish this so I can watch some of Puppy Bowl XI.

IBM Layoffs

Two weeks ago Robert Cringely wrote Next Week's Bloodbath At IBM Won't Fix The Real Problem on Forbes that IBM was preparing to lay off 26% of its workforce, around 110,000 people, with the code name Project Chrome.

IBM freaked out, as one does when their secret big news is now public, saying no way the numbers are that high. The next number floated was 10K - 12K layoffs this year with others saying that many per quarter.

Last week Cringely followed up with Anatomy Of A Layoff: How IBM Is Likely To Spin This Week's Force Reduction

Which did not happen.

Since the first article I have seen a small jump in the number of my LinkedIn profile views from folks at IBM in Rochester. I also had a couple of quick chats with business reporters looking for information of which I have as little as they do.

There is a level of fear in Rochester as this week starts… I think it is warranted.

It should be noted that IBM does continue to recruit in some divisions that are seeing growth.

JavaScript MN

Kevin Whinnery, Minnesota JavaScript User Group

Two tech user groups in a week left my brain a little tired. This event featured two lightning talks and then Kevin Whinnery (@kevinwhinnery), Developer Evangelist at Twilio and co-organizer of JavaScriptMN.

This was the second… maybe third time I have heard Kevin speak and while I don’t always know what he is talking about (I’m trying) he is easy to listen and thorough. His session:

Sharing Templates on the Front and Back Ends with Backbone and Node.js

Kevin is going to pinch hit with a look at how his team at Twilio is reusing Jade templates on the front and back ends in a Node.js application. Kevin will demonstrate how to structure an Express 4 web application to share the same set of templates as a rich client-side application written in Backbone (with Marionette for view management). URLs in the application can be fully rendered both client- and server-side, so browsers that don't support the HTML 5 history APIs or had errors loading JavaScript will fallback (hopefully gracefully) to server-rendered HTML. It ain't perfect but it's working okay so far.

There were a few conversations after about the local job scene, salaries and remote working.
