LinkedIn Survey: Top 25 Skills Of 2014

LinkedIn crunched a bunch of data and came up with The 25 Hottest Skills That Got People Hired in 2014. It needs to be noted that this is comes from their users and what recruiters are searching for on their site. This explains why healthcare, retail and other skills are not listed.

I am not surprised that a majority of the skills listed below are technical in nature. With marketing related skills in second.

For my recruiter and workforce planning friends this may give you some idea of what demand and competition is like.

LinkedIn notes four trends: STEM, Data, a second language (although not in the U.S.) and technical marketing.

Here are the top 25 U.S. skills of 2014 (click the link above for a list from a few other countries):

  • Statistical Analysis and Data Mining

  • Middleware and Integration Software

  • Storage Systems and Management

  • Network and Information Security

  • SEO/SEM Marketing

Call Me… I’m Never Too Busy

Call Paul DeBettignies

I have had what started as a couple, and now grown to quite a few, comments the past months similar to:

  • We had some recruiting we needed help with and knowing how busy you are we called someone else

  • We have been Twitter friends since 2009 and when I needed some advice on my last job search I wanted to reach out to you but I know how busy you are

  • I wanted to bring you in and talk to our executive team about how you use different tools for recruiting but I saw your calendar on the blog and I didn’t think you would have time for us so I didn’t contact you

Minnesota Startup ToggleGreen Seeking A UX Designer

Who do you know who is a freelance Designer looking for nights and weekend work for equity in a startup that could, if interested, turn into a full time role?

I am on the Advisory Board of ToggleGreen and we are looking for a Designer.

We have about 30 hours of work from now (Dec 15th) until Jan 1st and another 50 or so hours through January.

We don’t have a formal job description:

-No hand holding
-assertive, confident
-warp speed ramp up/onboarding
-flexible and a great communicator

This will have 30 hours of design work by the 1st. Most of the assets are done. We have a basic style guide and brand folder. We use JIRA for our PM tool, hipchat for communication. Expectation is to respond within 24 hours, and give a 24 hour heads up if an asset cannot be done by deadline. We are anti scope creep. Anything assigned has to be done through JIRA with at least a 24 hour heads up.

Lastly, for the right person they can have the keys to the UX kingdom. We'd prefer a long term UX lead/designer/director, etc.

I know what you are thinking… really, a startup? And for equity?

Check out this post from a month ago about why I am involved:

The Nerdery Launches A Software Engineering School

The Nerdery

Good news from The Nerdery today as they announce the launch of Prime Digital Academy (Prime).

This is the Twin Cities third code school or bootcamp like venture. Concordia University announced their bootcamp in September, Coding Bootcamp To Launch In Minnesota. There is also the FUSION program with MnSCU and Advance IT Minnesota.

There have been a number of other conversations locally and across the Upper Midwest about the creation of these schools.

I’m not shy about it… I am a big fan.

Companies continue to complain about the “War for Talent” and a “skill set shortage”. Many of whom did away with their internship and recent grad programs during the “Great Recession”. Now when they are looking for that ever elusive 3-5 year developer they can’t find them. Maybe that “cost cutting” they did back then is having a greater cost now.

Minnesota Headhunter, Minnesota Recruiter, Paul DeBettignies

I’m not a New Year’s Resolution kind of guy, I do a theme, but I usually have a couple of “things” I want to get done in the next year.

Thinking about 2015 one of those “things” is to help my friend’s network with each other.

I’ve had a number of conversations the past months where someone said something like:

I was having an issue with a non compete and I ended up with some bad advice.

    • And I was thinking if I had known I would have sent them to Teresa Thompson (disclaimer, she’s my wicked smart attorney).

My sister was looking for a senior level position with Minnesota non profit or community organization.

    • And I was thinking if I had known I would have sent them to Lars Leafblad.

Conversation With A Ruby Developer… Is Working For A Startup Risky

Startup Venture Loft Minneapolis Open House

A few weeks ago at the Startup Venture Loft open house I was introduced to a Ruby Developer who was there to network and see what the startup community is like in Minneapolis. They work for a really large company in town and are looking to see what other companies and work environments are like.

This was a new experience for them.

After giving them a sort of high level view of the community, who is doing what, who I know to be hiring, strengths and weaknesses of the culture, etc. I was asked the one question I am always asked:

Is working for a startup risky?

And my usual quick and blunt answer is:

Yes

And my follow up answer to that is:

And there is risk working for your current really large company too.
