As I type this the day before kickoff of the Gopher football season. I’m not ready for Fall yet… but being on campus today and taking a walk by TCF Bank Stadium helped get me in the mood.
And we have this weeks Brick by Brick, “Chasing Dreams”:
Coach Kill… he’s a good man and a good coach.
So to the question I have been asked more the past few weeks other than, “How is the fishing?” is “Gophers, what do you think?”
And I don’t know.
I think we have a more talented team than last year’s (2013) 8-5 team.
We have a few players on preseason “watch lists”:
Maxx Williams - TE - John Mackey Award
Tommy Olson - C - Rimington Award
Peter Mortell - P - Ray Guy Award
David Cobb - RB - Doak Walker Award
David Cobb - RB - Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award
We also have a more difficult schedule:
- 8/28 Eastern Illinois (HOME)
- 9/6 Middle Tennessee State (HOME)
- 9/13 TCU (AWAY)
- 9/20 San Jose State (HOME)
- 9/27 Michigan (AWAY)
- 10/11 Northwestern (HOME - Homecoming)
- 10/18 Purdue (HOME)
- 10/25 Illinois (AWAY)
- 11/8 Iowa (HOME)
- 11/15 Ohio State (HOME)
- 11/22 Nebraska (AWAY)
- 11/29 Wisconsin (AWAY)
Without getting in the weeds by position I think our defense is better than last year and clearly the secondary is the strength. I don’t think I have ever said that in my Gopher fan life.
While losing Ra'Shede Hageman to graduation leaves really big shoes to fill I think our DL is OK enough. And the LB’s are as good as last year, maybe better.
Offense has a question mark at QB. Maybe not so much with Mitch Leidner as the starter but after him. From all accounts Leidner had a good spring practice and the obvious team leader as fall started.
RB’s and TE’s we have a bunch of guys ready to go. WR’s are young… really young.
My thought… we go 8-4 or 7-5 and win the bowl game this year.
While a lateral in terms of wins, if we can maintain that with this schedule and add in a good recruiting class… for sure Gopher football will turn the corner.
