Job Search Tips: Yes You Should Do A Job Search During The Holidays

For the love of Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer please people stop…

No one hires during the holidays.

Companies don’t start recruiting until the new year.

HR has checked out and no one is around to talk to.

I have heard all of these in the past 48 hours. It’s a trifecta of stupidity silliness.

Every year I hear stuff like this. Sometimes it is from:

Job seekers

Media who do not know have a clue

This year… (taking a deep breath) this year I am tweaked because the advice above comes from a former HR professional to a friend of a friend of mine. I don’t know where they worked or what their experience is/was but I want to reach out to them and knock some sense in their head.

Maybe there is a reason for “former”.

Let’s review shall we?

A couple of years ago I wrote this

Bad Career Advice: No One Hires During The Holidays

From that post, here is in part why I think you should be doing a job search during the holidays:

  • Budgets tend to be a use it or lose it so they use it and hire people.

  • Holidays tend to be a time of job transition. Some folks will give their notice as they move to a new job and they need to be replaced.

  • Many companies will interview during this time so they can give offers starting Jan 2.

  • Take advantage of the “slower” business activity. Recruiters, HR and Hiring Managers may have some free time to talk with you.

  • If they are not interviewing for open positions get an informational interview.

  • Because most job seekers slow down (or stop) their search there may be less competition.

  • Even if you cannot get an interview during December you can at least be at the head of the line in January.

Still not convinced?

Here is an interview I did with the local CBS affiliate WCCO TV right before Christmas 2012. Heather Brown (@heatherbrown21) and I covered a lot of ground with this:

You can wait if you want to for the New Year… that’s your choice and not one I would make.
