Partner - Senior Software Engineer

Full Time Minneapolis Tech Job

Wildflower Schools

Summary

Wildflower Schools seeks one or more passionate, talented software engineers to join our team as we work to invent a new paradigm for how teachers gather and make use of information in the classroom. If you are excited about the idea of using your knowledge, skills, and experience to build technology that has the potential to change education for all, we want to talk to you.

Who are we?

At Wildflower Schools, we are planting the seeds of a new way of thinking about what schools can be, shaped by the latest research on child development and grounded in a century of practical learning. We are a rapidly growing network of one-room, teacher-led Montessori schools, bound together by a set of core principles, including deep connections between school, home, and community; a commitment to equity; attention to beauty; and a focus on nature. Consistent with our origins at the MIT Media Lab, our schools are also laboratories for innovation, continually exploring new questions and testing new ideas even as we preserve the authentic Montessori practice at the heart of our philosophy.

We currently have schools in Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Minnesota, and Kentucky, and passionate teacher leaders are working to build new schools across the United States and the world. We practice the principles of self-management and work in non-hierarchical structures at all levels of our organization. We are funded by many of the leading education and technology philanthropists in the country, including the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the Walton Family Foundation and the Omidyar Network among others.

What are we building?

As part of our commitment to classroom innovation, we are in the middle of an extensive technology research and development effort exploring ways to transform how Montessori teachers (and perhaps all teachers) gather and make use of information about the development of their students. Among the technologies we are exploring are embedded sensors and computer vision to automatically gather data about educational activity in the classroom, smart pen technology to support teachers and students in recording and organizing their own observations without the use of screens, various layers of artificial intelligence to process all of the data above and make meaning of the emerging patterns, and new interactive visualization tools to support teachers in making use of the resulting inferences. Some of these technologies are already deployed as prototypes in our classrooms while others are still at the ideation and user research phase. Consistent with our open source philosophy, we collaborate with researchers and technologists around the world and we make all of our technology available for others to use and adapt.

Back End Software Engineer - Technical Lead

Full Time Minnesota Tech Job

Full disclosure: This is not a “by the numbers” job, because we are not a “by the numbers” company.  We are, however, the recipient of multiple Best Places to Work awards and nominations. But wait….there’s more!

We are a rapidly growing digital agency seeking a talented, driven individual to come along for the ride. We’re looking for someone to do more than just fit in; we’re looking for a Back End Software Engineer and Technical Lead to make us better. Having the right personality is as important as having the right skillset. Culture is on a par with competence, and our culture is based on a combination of:

  • Business First, Online Second™ (Our “Why.”)

  • Partnerships, Not Transactions (Our “How.”)

  • POTIS (Just ask.)

Our developers are responsible for programming online platforms that bring to life our clients’ brand, vision and business purpose. You will be a primary client-facing technical resource, articulating and capturing requirements supporting client business requirements. Technical Leads don’t have to have all the answers - pulling together the expertise of the technical team to answer challenging questions and remove tough obstacles is a mark of success. You will work closely with project managers, representing technical resources, providing updates, enforcing scope and budget performance, and participating in client communications.

This work is at the core of our ongoing relationships with our clients. Every piece of value you deliver will directly contribute to their success and help those relationships thrive. Are you ready to make that kind of impact every day?

You'll be a foundational member of our product team and will put your personal touch on the technology that drives this company. You'll work directly with leadership to conceptualize features and will iterate with engineers to get them built. As we are a small and nimble team you'll wear multiple hats. You'll be doing product design, product strategy, information architecture, interaction design, visual design, and any other fancy words you can come up with that will make our platform better for our users. We are looking for someone who gets passionate about challenges and wants to be on the ground floor of building an outstanding product.

  • Strong communication skills

  • Proven understanding of user-centered design principles

  • Experience conducting various research techniques to gain insight about usability

  • Thorough experience developing prototypes at varying levels of fidelity (sketches, wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, etc) and working with others to test them

Full Time Minnesota Tech Job

Dispatch

You’ll be one of the first members of the engineering team and will be influential in the technical direction of the platform as we grow. This is a high responsibility, high autonomy position and you’ll be deploying code to production within the first day or two. You’ll be encouraged to propose features and functionality as the platform continues to mature.

We believe that product development is more fun when deploying early and often, splitting up work into bite-sized chunks and getting feedback from real users as quickly as possible. We also believe that a single engineer should be empowered to develop a feature from start to finish, and that the technology stack should be simple enough to make that realistic.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Design and write well-structured, easily maintainable, and thoroughly tested code
  • Participate in code reviews to ensure quality and consistency in the codebase, and to keep the team aligned
  • Deploy your projects to production frequently and monitor the results to ensure quality and positive outcome
  • Accept feedback from customers and adapt solutions with an eye for usability
  • Work with the rest of the product team to come up with ways to make the product better overall

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Experience building and supporting web applications in a full-stack capacity
  • Proficiency with Ruby on Rails or Javascript/React, and an interest in getting your hands dirty on both backend and frontend
  • Strong understanding of SQL
  • A desire to dig into new technologies and learn as you go
  • Bonus: React Native, iOS, Android, Google Maps APIs
