Conversation With A Java Developer… My Recruiter Contacted Me On Match, What Do I Do

What

Last week I posted on Facebook and LinkedIn the following beginning of a conversation and received many funny comments:

Awkward...

  • Developer: So last week I submitted my resume to XYZ, Inc
  • Me: Uh huh
  • Dev: I have an interview next week
  • Me: Cool
  • Dev: Last night I get a message on Match, it's the Recruiter.
  • Me: Oh shit

(Recruiter has no idea this is the same guy)

Just when I think I have seen and heard it all in recruiting… at least this is a fun story.

Minnesota Morning | MN IT Layoffs And Top 10 LinkedIn Skills

We’ve had an amazing fall in Minneapolis (some photos below from this weekend) and the forecast for this week is in the 60’s. Why I am talking about the weather to start this… anyone who was in Minneapolis 25 years ago today will remember the Halloween Blizzard of 1991. An epic storm that dropped 28.4 inches of snow over three days.

I was in college then and my fraternity had a Halloween party that I was not able to get to… I was not living near campus and by the time I started to make the drive it was too late. Roads were not drivable. I missed a 3 day party #BLEEP

MN IT Layoffs

There have been a number of IT layoffs in Minneapolis in 2016. While sensitive to those impacted, in a macro view I would call most of them “normal”. Most people found jobs within weeks and life continued on.

In the next days there is going to be a BIG announcement from a company that will impact 100’s of local tech pros. Most will be OK either landing in the new structure, applying for jobs already posted at the company or finding a new job at other companies. But this is going to get some headlines.

Conversation With An Android Developer… Let Your Recruiter Friends Know You Are Looking

I was at a Minneapolis tech user group a couple of weeks ago and was talking to a couple of developers about a particularly cool set of roles that were going to be opening up at a local tech company. A 3rd developer, someone I have had a couple of conversations with at tech events this year, was listening in and asking some questions about these and other jobs.

I asked them if they were looking. They said and this:

Why did it take so long for you to recruit me?

And I kind of froze.

I am not nearly as aggressive as most of my tech recruiter colleagues who assume that everyone is looking for a new job and everyone should be recruited. I rely on my reputation of being open, approachable and not the “annoying, creepy recruiter”. when they are curious and want to talk I am ready for them.

Recruiting Tips: Why Recruiters Should Stop Posting Recruiting Content

Stop being boring

I have an observation to make and first a disclaimer… I am not suggesting you completely stop posting content from SourceCon, ERE, Recruiting Daily and the blogs you read. Are we clear on that? Good.

Here is what I am suggesting: let’s say you recruit Tech, Product, Digital and Data professionals in Minneapolis and St Paul and you only post content on the latest LinkedIn Boolean search thing, how to create a better employee referral program or how to create personas… do you think your candidates care about that stuff?
