Minnesota Fastest Growing State For IT Jobs - Summer 2015

Since around the beginning of Q2 ‘15 I have been a part of many conversations with recruiters in town, startup and Fortune 500, about some trends we have been seeing including:

- Generally companies are in another hiring spree

- Companies seem to be loosening up their job requirements

- There seems to be a small inflow of IT pros from the west coast

This week from Dice.com:

Pop quiz: What’s the fastest-growing state for technology jobs?

You might be tempted to say California or New York, or even North Carolina. But according to new data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, it’s actually Minnesota, which saw the size of its tech workforce jump 8.36 percent over the past six months, to 37,600 workers.

Is Your State Losing Tech Jobs?

Let’s be clear… this is a percentage growth number NOT a total number of jobs created. Clearly other states would be doing better.

This is an important number as it shows the Minnesota tech community continues to grow. Some would have you believe that everyone is leaving for the West Coast.

It’s just not true.

Minnesota IT Jobs, Salary and Recruiting Report Summer 2015

The most frequently asked questions I receive are some variations of:

What’s going on with Minnesota IT Jobs?

What’s the going salary/rate for a…

“War for Talent” real or not?

How in demand are my skills?

Why can’t we find who we are looking for?

To give some clarity about “what’s going in Minnesota” around this time of year (after all the spring events and conferences) I put together a summary of all of the info I have gathered over the past months, add in a bunch of reference points from national IT job and salary surveys and put it online.

The 2015 version below is 32 minutes in length with 95 slides…. it moves pretty quick:

  • Intro
  • What’s going on in MN
  • Recruiting & Retention
  • Job and Skills in demand
  • Salary info
  • Conclusion

If you are a startup CEO, in HR or a corporate recruiter, tech manager or CIO, coordinate a tech group or are an IT professional (did I leave anyone out?) and have questions, thoughts or comments, or want a copy of the slide deck send me an email:

Minnesota IT Jobs And Unemployment Q1 ‘15

Q4 ’14 I held a number of roundtables with Minnesota Recruiter and HR colleagues to talk about recruiting, IT jobs and salary statistics. I do this every Q4 and it allows us to share information, confirm and/or question what we see going on from our corner of the community.

Last year most of the discussions were held in mid-December and a few of us mentioned that it seemed that a lot of IT pros were moving around to new companies or going on their own as consultants.

Some said they did not see it.

As 2015 has progressed many Minnesota Recruiter and HR colleagues have been talking about it. “Churn” is a word many of us are using and most say that it started around December 1st.

And we are seeing more of it.

At MinneBar 10 (April ’15) it was very noticeable when talking to Developers. Quite a few had made a move since December 1 ’14 and more were talking about doing it this spring.

Dice has an analysis with BLS (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) numbers and they show an uptick in the number of “Voluntary Quits” in Q1 2015 from Q4 2014:

Average Quits In IT

minnedemo 19 Will Have 7 Demos Including ToggleGreen

While prepping to write this I went to the minne* web site and on the wiki at the time was this:

Paul DeBettignies, Minnesota Headhunter, Minnesota Recruiter

I learned a few minnebar’s ago to bring a power strip. Not only do I always have my devices charged… I for a short time become a few folks best friend.

minnedemo 19 is next week (Feb 5th) with 7 groups presenting including my friends at ToggleGreen (@ToggleGreen). See this post from last month:

ToggleGreen Adds Paul DeBettignies To Its Advisory Board

I posted this photo a couple of weeks ago and said it was a late Sunday night at ToggleGreen working on a product demo:

ToggleGreen, Minnesota StartUp

I guess that was sort of true… the product demo we were working on was the video submittal for minnedemo. Clearly we did OK.

Besides ToggleGreen here is who is presenting:

Minnesota Startup ToggleGreen Seeking A UX Designer

Who do you know who is a freelance Designer looking for nights and weekend work for equity in a startup that could, if interested, turn into a full time role?

I am on the Advisory Board of ToggleGreen and we are looking for a Designer.

We have about 30 hours of work from now (Dec 15th) until Jan 1st and another 50 or so hours through January.

We don’t have a formal job description:

-No hand holding
-assertive, confident
-warp speed ramp up/onboarding
-flexible and a great communicator

This will have 30 hours of design work by the 1st. Most of the assets are done. We have a basic style guide and brand folder. We use JIRA for our PM tool, hipchat for communication. Expectation is to respond within 24 hours, and give a 24 hour heads up if an asset cannot be done by deadline. We are anti scope creep. Anything assigned has to be done through JIRA with at least a 24 hour heads up.

Lastly, for the right person they can have the keys to the UX kingdom. We'd prefer a long term UX lead/designer/director, etc.

I know what you are thinking… really, a startup? And for equity?

Check out this post from a month ago about why I am involved:

So yeah, I am serious.
