On April 15th, 2011 we held the 13th Minnesota Recruiters Conference at Best Buy HQ’s. We had around 200 in attendance that day.
The night before the event sponsors, speakers and volunteers were invited to Oberon (group sponsor) to help celebrate their 5th Anniversary
This gave me some time to finally meet in person someone who I have called friend for 5+ years, Jim Durbin (Blog - Twitter - LinkedIn - Facebook). I met Jim online shortly after I started this blog when he was working as a recruiter in St. Louis.
For our event we brought Jim and his business partner Craig Fisher (Blog - Twitter - LinkedIn) to present to the group.
The evening at Oberon gave everyone a chance to get to know each other and to take care of some important business at the dart board. Yes I know this first photo is blurry but Jim was that fast. Second photo is Craig and Jim:
I have more photos posted below…
Here are the day of event slides:
We started the morning with Amy Langer (Bio- Twitter - LinkedIn), Co-Founder of Salo, Oberon and NumberWorks with the topic:
“Do The Things You Love And Love The Things You Do”
Amy spoke about her business and personal story including being an entrepreneur, starting three businesses before and during the recession, being a mother and juggling everything day to day.
This was the first time we had someone not present on recruiting specifically but tell their story. Amy was warmly received and I plan on doing similar things at future events.
After a break we had Jim Durbin speak on the topic:
“Driving Social Through The Organization: Moving From Doing Social To Being Social”
Jim focused a lot on us not just being good recruiters or doing social recruiting well but owning the social media space in our companies. This was great opportunity to listen to someone who has been in our shoes and also worked on the business side of companies.
You can see Jim’s presentation here:
Craig Fisher closed the morning with:
“Linkedin Search And Profile Optimization For Recruiters”
This was the first time we had tackled LinkedIn at an event mostly because I was waiting for some who could come in and actually show us how to use versus talk about it. Craig gave some great pointers that left even those more experienced users with new ideas to work on.
Here is Craig’s presentation:

Ahh… the parking lot before the chaos begins and Best Buy’s NASCAR replica. I want to have a company that is big enough one day to have one of these.
Early arrivals. No matter how much I try, I can never get anyone to sit in front.

I needed to get the fellas some pics they could use for their web sites
Finally… I remembered to get a group shot of speakers, sponsors and volunteers.
