Rant: So You Have 10,000+ Twitter Followers, F’ing Great

OK, I promise that before typing this I have counted to 10. And I am not blogging angry. Yes someone in perceived “authority” tweaked me today while selling their training materials.

For anyone new to the social media craze, are impressed by numbers or are doing reference checks on a speaker/consultant/guru/expert the number of followers one has does, the number itself, does not mean anything.

Social Media Capital: Are You Running A Surplus Or A Deficit?

This post is created out of two events that occurred in the last 45 minutes and rather than think about it, wonder what it means or trying to create a really smart post I am going to write and post and other than a grammar/spell check making no edits.

To the last part of the title CNBC is buzzing the past day or so about how the government has said the deficit has increased by 2 more trillion dollars than first estimated. Yikes.

To the first part of the title, a guy I sort of know is a recruiter and sends me an email asking why his job post tweets are getting little traffic and worse why his follower numbers are decreasing.

Posting Your Resume On Craigslist - What You Need to Know

The following post is courtesy of the Recruiting Blogswap:

From: Jessica Holbrook is a former Executive Hiring Manager for Fortune 500 companies and President/CEO of Great Resumes Fast.

Recently I was scanning through the resumes listed on Craigslist and noticed something very surprising. Most of the listings weren’t resumes at all. They were job seekers begging and pleading for a job. Once I pulled myself up off the floor from falling out of my chair in disbelief I said something has to be done! So here is a brief list of rules to remember when posting your resume (or anything for that matter) to the resumes category on Craigslist.

Paul DeBettignies Included On Minnesota Social Media Innovator Lists

Minnesota Social Media Innovator

The Minneapolis and St Paul area has one of the strongest marketing, public relations and social media communities in the country. What sets the Twin Cities apart from most cities is the open collaboration we see from firms and individuals and the ongoing learning that takes place with the areas many organizations and events.

Arik Hanson (@arikhanson) who writes the Communications Conversations blog took nominations to find a list of social media innovators and came up with this list Top 20 Minnesota Social Media Innovators.

I am very humbled that I was included in the list.

Just as cool is that there is another Minnesota recruiter on the list, Joshua Kahn (@joshuakahn) who writes the find+attract blog.

Minnesota Layoffs: St Jude Medical | BAE Systems | ADC

There has been a lot of talk about the bottom of the employment market being reached (I agree) and a pick up in hiring (depends on who you are, where you live and what you do) but to think the bad news is over is putting ones head in the sand.

The other issue is that jobs are being increased 1, 5 and 10 at a time while cuts are still much larger.

St. Jude Medical – 200 jobs

BAE Systems – 314 jobs

ADC – 55

How To Conduct Yourself During An Interview

The following post is courtesy of the Recruiting Blogswap:

From: Lorraine Russo

Not only is it important to know what you are going to say during an interview, it is equally important to know how you are being perceived and judged by the people interviewing you.

Say What?

Practice your diction. For example, when using words with “ing” in them, clearly pronounce each letter. Do not say, “I was goin’ to school...”. Doing so makes you sound uneducated, no matter how smart you are. Above all else, interviewers are looking for candidates with strong communication skills.
