Of course this article from the St. Paul Pioneer Press was going to hit home with me, Good deeds on company time.
It is not a surprise to read that Minnesota ranks third in a volunteerism survey or that Minnesota companies are “doing good” in the community. Large and small companies have been doing this for decades.
What I was happy to see is the mentioning of recruitment and retention as part of the benefit to the company. It’s easy for a company to sign a check or have an event once a year on a weekend. But to let your employees out during the workweek, that’s a different thing.
The article also mentions younger workers many of who as college students were involved in community service. I am frequently asked by soon to be Minnesota grads which companies are known for being involved in the community.
I look forward to the day when this is not news. Until then, if you have not yet instituted a policy for paid time off consider doing so. It’s a win for you, the employee, and the community you do business in.
